The cover picture shows the structural formula of the new N ‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) “4,5‐dicyano‐1,3‐dimesitylimidazol‐2‐ylidene” (middle) and the X‐ray structures of its precursor 4,5‐dicyano‐1,3‐dimesityl‐2‐(pentafluorophenyl)‐2,3‐dihydroimidazole (bottom), the [AgCl(NHC)]‐complex (top) on the left side and the [RhCl(COD)(NHC)]‐complex (top) and [RhCl(CO) 2 (NHC)]‐complex (bottom) on the right side. For the first time, a 1,3‐diarylated 4,5‐dicyanoimidazoline could be synthesized. Via thermolysis of the imidazoline, the corresponding [AgCl(NHC)]‐complex could be formed and used as transmetallation agent for the preparation of the [RhCl(COD)(NHC)]‐ and the [RhCl(CO) 2 (NHC)]‐complex. The sterical demand of the new NHC was determined using the crystallographic data of the Rh I complexes and the electronic properties could be calculated from infrared spectroscopic data of the [RhCl(CO) 2 (NHC)]‐complex by determination of the Tolman Electronic Parameter.More details are discussed in the article by H.‐J. Holdt et al. on page 1731 ff.
