The cover picture shows the structure of the anion [I‐ closo ‐B 12 H 11 ] 2– calculated at the B3LYP/6‐311++G(d, p) level of theory and the anions [Me 3 SiC≡C‐ closo ‐B 12 H 11 ] 2– and [HC≡C‐ closo ‐B 12 H 11 ] 2– in the crystals of their tetrabutylammonium salts. The trimethylsilylalkynyl derivative was obtained by a Pd‐catalyzed microwave‐assisted Kumada‐type cross‐coupling reaction starting from the iodinated boron cluster. Microwave irradiation resulted in a tremendous improvement of all reaction parameters, for example a shorter reaction time, compared to the synthesis performed with conventional heating. Desilylation of [Me 3 SiC≡C‐ closo ‐B 12 H 11 ] 2– under basic conditionsyielded the terminal alkyne. The lower part of the picture depicts the 13 C and 11 B NMR spectraof the anion [HC≡C‐ closo ‐B 12 H 11 ] 2– as well as the IR and Raman spectra of its Cs + salt. More details are discussed in the article by Maik Finze and Detlef Gabel et al. on pp. 512ff.
