The comparison of different concepts to approximate ionic radii and volumes ( V.M. Goldschmidt, L. Pauling, R.D. Shannon , W. Biltz ) reveal their usefulness although they are knowingly based on simple models. Nevertheless, calculations of atomic and ionic volumina based on the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) developed by Bader will prospectively afford deeper insights into bonding situations of compounds from the field of inorganic solid state chemistry.
