The energetic plasticizer N ‐methyl‐ N ‐(2‐nitroxyethyl)nitramine ( 2 ) and its precursor N ‐methyl‐ N ‐(2‐nitroxyethyl)ammonium nitrate ( 1 ) were synthesized by nitration of 2‐(methylamino)ethanol and characterized by X‐ray crystallography, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H, 13 C, 14 N), vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman), mass spectrometry and differential thermal analysis. The sensitivities were determined according to BAM methods and the detonation parameters were calculated with the EXPLO5 computer program to identify them as potentially explosive compounds.
