The ternary molybdenum tantalum oxide Mo 2 Ta 2 O 11 was synthesized through two different experimental routes. The crystal structure was determined from X‐ray powder diffraction data. Mo 2 Ta 2 O 11 crystallizes in space group R \bar{3} m (no. 166) with the lattice parameters a = 562.82(2) pm and c = 2516.2(1) pm in hexagonal setting. A so far unknown layered structure with three formula units per unit cell is observed. Corner sharing TaO 6 octahedra form double layers perpendicular to [001] with MoO 4 tetrahedra on each side. The tetrahedra are connected by corners to the TaO 6 octahedra and are isolated from each other. The crystal structure can be described in relation to the ReO 3 ‐type.
