Four thiocyanato complexes with Co II and Ni II , [Co(NCS) 2 (htm) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ][Co(NCS) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] · H 2 O ( 1 ), [Ni(NCS) 2 (htm)(CH 3 OH) 2 (H 2 O)] ( 2 ), [Ni(NCS) 4 (Hhtm) 2 ] ( 3 ), and [Co(NCS) 2 (apm) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] · 2H 2 O ( 4 ) (htm = hexamethylenetetramine, apm = 2‐aminopyrimidine), were synthesized and characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses. For compounds 1 – 4 , NCS – acts as terminal ligand and coordinates to the metal ion through the nitrogen atom. The uncoordinated sulfur atom is involved in hydrogen bonds, which link these discrete units to form 3D supramolecular structures. For compounds 2 and 3 , these networks are further stabilized by van der Waals S ··· S interactions. According to the analytical data of compounds 1 – 4 and some reported discrete thiocyanato compounds, it can be concluded that the presence of S ··· S interaction or not may be determined by the metal and NCS – ratio, as well as by the size of the ligand.
