The infrared (IR) and Raman spectra of YBa 3 B 9 O 18 were recorded and interpreted on the basis of the D 3h local symmetry of the six membered planar B 3 O 6 rings present in its structure. For comparative purposes also the IR spectra of NdBa 3 B 9 O 18 , GdBa 3 B 9 O 18 and YbBa 3 B 9 O 18 were recorded and analyzed.
