Based on the use of [Ni(3‐pytpy) 2 ][BF 4 ] 2 (3‐pytpy=4′‐(3‐pyridyl)‐2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine) ( 1 ) as expanded 3, 3′‐N, N′‐rodlike building blocks and Cd II atoms as metal “nodes”, two novel Ni II ‐Cd II heterometallic compounds [Ni(3‐pytpy) 2 Cd 2 Cl 6 ] ( 2 ) and [Ni(3‐pytpy) 2 Cd(NCS‐κN) 4 ]·CH 3 OH ( 3 ) have been synthesized under different conditions. In the precursory complex 1 , Ni II atom is coordinated by the tpy domains of two 3‐pytpy ligands, while the pyridyl tails remain uncoordinated. In compound 2 , [Ni(3‐pytpy) 2 ] 2+ adopting cis ‐conformation bridges two four‐coordinated Cd II into trinuclear structure. In compound 3 , [Ni(3‐pytpy) 2 ] 2+ adopting trans ‐conformation connects six‐coordinated Cd II into 1D chain and the chains were packed into double‐chains through face‐to‐face π‐π stacking interactions.
