The family of compounds RuSr 2 RE Cu 2 O 8 ( RE = Yb, Tm, Er, Ho, Dy, Tb, Gd, Eu, Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce and La) has been prepared. At normal pressure, Sm, Eu and Gd seem to be the only RE elements that accept to enter into the structure of RuSr 2 RE Cu 2 O 8 . High pressures and temperatures are needed in order to obtain the rest of the members. We describe here the search for the optimum synthesis conditions. The variation of the pressure needed to stabilize each compound show a remarkable gaussian correlation with the rare earth ion size and do not follow the classic lanthanide contraction so often observed in the chemistry of those elements.
