The crystal structure of (H 9 O 4 ) 2 [Mo 2 (S 2 ) 2 Cl 8 ] ( 1 ), obtained by treatment of MoS 2 Cl 3 (TeCl 4 ) 2 with hot concentrated HCl with subsequent crystallization upon cooling, was determined. The isostructural bromide (H 9 O 4 ) 2 [Mo 2 (S 2 ) 2 Br 8 ] ( 2 ) was obtained in the same way. The proton conductivity of 1 and 2 was measured. Thermal decomposition of both compounds leads to amorphous MoS 2 with a large specific surface (143 m 2 /g for MoS 2 , obtained from 1 ).
