Following a modified prescription of 1969, the anion B 24 H 23 3− was formed from B 12 H 12 2− by electrolysis at 1.5 V. The crystal structure of M 3 (B 24 H 23 )(MeCN) 1.5 (M = [CpFe{C 5 H 4 (CH 2 NMe 3 )}]) revealed the anion to consist of two icosahedral B 12 H 11 units, connected by a bent B–H–B bridge. From the reaction of B 12 H 12 2− with CF 3 COOH, reported in the literature as a source of B 24 H 23 3− , the substitution product B 12 H 11 (CF 3 COO) 2− was isolated.
