Black single crystals of MnBiSe 2 I were obtained by the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of Mn, Bi, BiI 3 , and Se at 600 °C for 7 days. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C 2/ m , with a = 13.428(2), b = 4.112(1), c = 10.130(2) Å, β = 90.97(2)°, and Z = 4. The crystal structure refinement based on 849 reflections converged at R = 0.0380 and wR 2 = 0.0916, respectively. MnBiSe 2 I forms a layer structure consisting of MnSe 6 octahedra, MnSe 2 I 4 octahedra, and BiSe 3+2 pyramids.
