Single crystals of two new europium/strontium chloride carbodiimides M 2 Cl 2 NCN were obtained in high yields from the reactions of the corresponding chlorides, sodium azide and sodium cyanide at elevated temperatures. The crystal structures of isotypic Eu 2 Cl 2 NCN and Sr 2 Cl 2 NCN ( C 2/ m , Z = 2; Eu phase: a = 9.6200(17), b = 4.2299(7), c = 7.2224(13) Å and β = 98.002(4)°, wR 2 = 0.0598, R 1 = 0.0242; Sr phase: a = 9.6225(9), b = 4.2508(4), c = 7.2498(6) Å and β = 97.839(4)°, wR 2 = 0.0446, R 1 = 0.0223) contain M 2+ /NCN 2‐ layers separated by chloride ions. The M 2+ are sevenfold coordinated, and the NCN 2‐ units exhibit the carbodiimide shape.
