Black single crystals of nine ternary iodides A II MI 4 (A = Sr, Ba, Nd, Sm, Eu; M = La, Ce) have been obtained from reactions of the metals A with the triiodides of M in sealed tantalum containers at elevated temperatures. They all crystallize isotypically with BaLaI 4 (monoclinic, I2/a, Z = 4). The most important structural feature are chains of face‐sharing square antiprisms [MI 8 ] in accord with the formula A[MI 8/2 ]. M‐M distances are, on the average, 370.6 and 367.9 pm for M = La and Ce, respectively. With all M‐M distances equal, these iodides are expected to be one‐dimensional metals according to the formulation (A 2+ )(M 3+ )(e ‐ )(I ‐ ) 4 with the excess electron residing in a 5d band.
