Small lamellar air sensitive crystals of NaBaBi with a blue metallic lustre were obtained by direct reaction of the elements. The new polar intermetallic compound, which can formally be described as Na + Ba 2+ Bi 3− crystallizes isotypic to Fe 2 P with lattice constants a = 859.1(1) pm, c = 509.1(1) pm (Z = 3, P $\bar 6$ 2m ). NaBaBi is a small gap semiconductor similar to pnictides of the type A 3 B (A: alkali metal, B: Sb) and thus is a potential candidate for photoelectric applications.
