Transparent yellow crystals of Ba 4 [WN 4 ]Cl 2 were grown at 850°C by the reaction of Ba(NH 2 ) 2 with W in a KCl melt under flowing nitrogen. The compound crystallizes monoclinic in P2 1 /m and Z = 2 with the cell parameters a = 8.447(4) Å, b = 6.143(2) Å, c = 10.727(6) Å and β = 99.04(4)°. The crystal structure contains isolated anions [WN 4 ] 6− and Cl − . It is the first nitridotungstate(VI) chloride reported so far.
