Organoruthenaborane Chemistry. VIII. Reactions of [{(η 6 ‐C 6 Me 6 )RuCl 2 } 2 ] and [{(η 6 ‐MeC 6 H 4 l Pr)RuCl 2 } 2 ] with Cs[ arachno ‐6‐SB 9 H 12 ]: Isolation of ten‐, eleven‐, and twelve‐vertex ruthenathiaboranes and their characterization by N.M.R. spectroscopy

Reaction of [{(η 6 ‐C 6 H 6 )RuCl 2 } 2 ] with arachno ‐[6‐SB 9 H 12 ]‐ and NaH in CH 2 Cl 2 /acetone solution gives a low yield (1.3%) of a closo ten‐vertex ruthenathiaborane formulated as [2‐(η 6 ‐C 6 Me 6 )‐ closo ‐2,1‐RuSB 8 H 8 ] whereas reaction of the p‐cymene analogue [{(η 6 ‐MeC 6 H 4 Pr)RuCl 2 } 2 ] with arachno ‐[6‐SB 9 H 12 ] − and N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylnaphalene‐1,8‐diamine (tmnd) in acetone yields nido ‐eleven‐vertex and closo ‐twelve‐vertex ruthenathiaboranes of proposed formulations [11‐Cl‐7‐(η 6 MeC 6 H 4 Pr)‐ nido ‐7, 8‐RuSB 9 H 10 ] (2.2%), [2,3‐(η 6 ‐MeC 6 H 4 Pr) 2 ‐ closo ‐2,3,1‐Ru 2 SB 9 H 9 ] (21%), and [7‐Cl‐2,3‐(η 6 ‐MeC 6 H 4 Pr) 2 ‐ closo ‐2,3,1‐Ru 2 SB 9 H 8 ] (8%). The products are all air‐stable red or yellow solids and their characterization made use of nuclear magnetic double resonance and twodimensional correlation n.m.r. spectroscopy (COSY).
