Sharp line cathodoluminescence spectra were obtained at 8 K from Tm 3+ and Er 3+ ions implanted into hexagonal ZnS and ZnSe crystal platelets after annealing the implanted crystals for two hours at 500°C in vacuo. No rare earth emission was detected from ion implanted hexagonal CdS. Assignments have been made for the 2S+1 L J terms of the rare earth ions which were responsible for the observed luminescence. Although the lattice location of the ions may be considered, it is not at present possible for us to arrive at firm conclusions about their site symmetry since the spectra were too complex to permit a detailed crystal field analysis.
