The influence of a large excess of alkali surface ions on the chromium(II) surface compound on silica gel has been investigated. Diffuse reflectance spectra of samples with lithium, sodium and cesium show strong differences to those from standard chromium(II) samples and from chromium(II) coordinated to surface silanol groups. Catalytic activity was improved in the case of the samples with lithium and relatively low sodium content. On the basis of diffuse reflectance spectra and polymerization measurements a correlation between the position and the intensity of the u.v. band around 31000 cm −1 and the catalytic activity of the samples is observed. This correlation gives direct access to the inhomogeneous population of the catalytic center.
