The general alloying behaviour of tin with the rare earths was summarized on the base of the available literature data. A re‐examination of the LaSn alloys has been performed using x‐ray and metallographic analyses. The existence of the following phases has been observed or confirmed:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm La}_{\rm 3} {\rm Sn,}\,{\rm \alpha - La}_{\rm 5} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 3} {\rm,}\,{\rm \beta - La}_{\rm 5} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 3} {\rm,}\,{\rm La}_{\rm 5} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 4} {\rm,}\, \sim {\rm La}_{\rm 3} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 5} {\rm,}\, \sim {\rm La}_{\rm 2} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 5} {\rm,}\,{\rm LaSn}_{\rm 3} $$\end{document} . The formation heats of the LaSn alloys have been measured using a direct isoperibol calorimeter. The values of ΔH form (solid alloys, room temperature, K cal/g atom) are the following:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {{\rm La}_{\rm 3} {\rm Sn}\,{\rm = }\,{\rm - 12}{\rm .3}\,{\rm \pm }\,{\rm 0}{\rm .5;}\,{\rm La}_{\rm 5} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 3} \,{\rm = }\,{\rm - 18}{\rm .5}\,{\rm \pm }\,{\rm 0}{\rm .5;}\,{\rm La}_{\rm 5} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 4} \,{\rm = }\,{\rm - 20}{\rm .9}\,{\rm \pm }\,{\rm 1}{\rm .0;}} \hfill \\ {{\rm La}_{\rm 3} {\rm Sn}_{\rm 5} \,{\rm = }\,{\rm - 18}{\rm .7}\,{\rm \pm }\,{\rm 1}{\rm .0;}\,{\rm LaSn}_{\rm 3} \,{\rm = }\,{\rm - 14}{\rm .5}\,{\rm \pm }\,{\rm 0}{\rm .5}} \hfill \\ \end{array}\, $$\end{document} . A re‐examination of the YSn alloys has been also carried out confirming the existence and the crystal structures of the following phases: Y 5 Sn 3 , Y 5 Sn 4 , Y 11 Sn 10 , YSn 2 and YSn 3 . A few calorimetric measurements performed on selected Sn‐rich alloys have given the following values of the ΔH form : YSn 2 (−15.5 ± 1.0 Kcal/g atom), YSn 3 (−12.5 ± 0.5 Kcal/g atom). The results obtained are discussed briefly and are compared with the data available for other rare earth‐tin alloys.
