The mechanism of the topotactic reaction Pb(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 → PbHPO 4 + H 3 PO 4 was investigated and the crystal structures of Pb(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and PbHPO 4 were determined. Starting from a monocrystal of Pb(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 , the topotactic character becomes visible: The crystallites of PbHPO 4 are formed in a unique crystallographic orientation. The phosphoric acid is amorphous and included in these crystallites. A comparison of the two crystal structures in the observed orientation relation shows that both contain a motif of the same kind, which is in the same orientation. On this basis a hypothesis on the structural mechanism of the investigated reaction is discussed.
