The conditions of the existence of two dimensional magnetic oxides are reviewed from both the theoretical and experimental point of view. From the magnetic data of oxides belonging to two different structural types; the K 2 NiF 4 ‐type which occurs in Ca 2 MnO 4 , CaLaFeO 4 , SrLaBO 4 (B = Cr, Fe, Co) and the α‐NaFeO 2 ‐type which occurs in oxides of formula ACrO 2 (A = Li, Na, K), a discussion is given of the relation between dimensionality and the magnetic behaviour.
