MoTe 2 is readily oxidized in air above about 250°C. The product distribution varies with the degree of oxidation and is in accordance with the expectation based on the knowledge of the interactions in the MoO 3 TeO 2 Te and MoO 3 TeO 2 MoO 2 systems, now extended to the MoO 3 TeO 2 Mo and MoTeO phase triangles at 550°C. An earlier proposed novel composition MoTe 1.8 O 4.9 is shown to be a mixture of Te 2 MoO 7 , TeMo 5 O 16 and Te.
