A new synthesis for BrO 2 F is described: A solid co‐condensate of BrF 5 and H 2 O (molar ratio 5:1), prepared at − 196°C, reacts to BrO 2 F by warming up to −60°C. The nearly quantitative conversion of H 2 O to BrO 2 F makes this method economically important for the preparation of Br 18 O 2 F, especially. The i.r. spectra of BrO 2 F and Br 18 O 2 F have been obtained in argon matrix, in solid state, and in the gas phase. BrO 2 F is monomeric and unstable (τ 1/2 ≃ 30 min) in the gas phase. Evidence is presented for stabilization by association in the condensed state.
