1,10‐Phenanthroline N‐oxide(L) interacts with 3d metal chlorides to yield the following chelates: [CrL 2 Cl 2 ]Cl · H 2 O; [FeL 2 Cl 2 ]Cl; [FeLCl 2 ] x (x = 1 or 2); [MnL 2 Cl 2 ]; [ClLMnCl 2 MnLCl] · 2 H 2 O; [CoL 2 Cl 2 ] · H 2 O; [CoLCl 2 ] · H 2 O; [NiL 2 Cl 2 ] · 2 H 2 O; [CuL 2 Cl]Cl · 2 H 2 O or [CuL 2 Cl 2 ] · 2 H 2 O; and [ZnL 3 ][ZnCl 4 ] · 2 H 2 O. These complexes were characterized by means of their infrared and electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibilties, X‐ray powder diffraction patterns and molar conductivities.
