The synthesis of new ternary silicate and germanate phases containing large alkali and alkaline‐earth cations is described. They are made by solid‐state reaction of mixtures of carbonates or oxalates with SiO 2 or GeO 2 , or by fusion and subsequent recrystallization of the glass. Representatives of the cubic M 4 + M 2+ X 3 O 9 family include Na 4 CaSi 3 O 9 and the isostructural compounds K 4 CaGe 3 O 9 , K 4 SrGe 3 O 9 and K 4 SrSi 3 O 9 . K 4 BaSi 3 O 9 is pseudocubic: the symmetry of Na 4 SrSi 3 O 9 is unknown. The rhombohedral M 8 + M 2+ X 10 O 25 family includes K 8 CaSi 10 O 25 , K 8 SrSi 10 O 25 and K 8 BaSi 10 O 25 . Na 2 CaGe 2 O 6 and Na 2 SrGe 2 O 6 are isostructural but both are structurally unrelated to Na 2 BaSi 2 O 6 . Na 2 Ba 2 Ge 2 O 7 and Na 2 Ba 2 Si 2 O 7 are structurally similar.
