Visible absorption spectra and apparent molar extinction coefficients of cobalt(II) nitrate solutions in mixtures of water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) have been measured as a function of solvent composition for different metal ion concentrations. Assumptions found applicable to the case of Ni(II) were successfully applied to cobalt(II), and the data are discussed in this context. Average numbers of DMSO (and water) molecules bound per cobalt(II) ion were calculated. On this basis it was established that cobalt(II) discriminates against water in favor of DMSO in its first coordination sphere, in compliance with the relative donor strengths or basicities of the two ligands, yet in some contrast to their field strengths.
