The divalent silicon species SiBr 2 and SiCl 2 were produced by the reaction of the corresponding silicon tetrahalides with elemental silicon at temperatures between 900 and 1150°. The I.R. spectra of these molecules trapped in different matrices (Ne, Ar, N 2 ) were observed, and the fundamentals assigned. A set of valence force constants and the bond angles were obtained from accurate measurements of chlorine and silicon isotopic splittings.
