The visible absorption spectra of Cr(III) and Cu(II) acetylacetonates were measured in their solutions in n‐octanol and in 1,1,2,2‐tetrachloroethane at 20–120°C, and also in their vapor state at ca. 200–300°C, together with the spectra of the corresponding hexafluoroacetylacetonates in the vapor state. The spectra of the Cr(III) chelates change only slightly with alteration of the molecular surroundings and temperature, while the corresponding changes in the case of the Cu(II) chelates are very much larger. In the latter case, the spectral changes were ascribed chiefly to the variation in the degree of planarity of the chelate molecules.
