From an infra‐red analysis of the intermediates formed in the mercuration of sulphosalicylic acid, it has been found that the zwitterionic structure ( 3 − OS · C 6 H 2 COOH · OH · Hg + ) postulated for 3‐mercuri‐5‐sulphosalicylic acid is essentially correct.
