The rate of formation of cerium hydride was found to increase with temperature from 120–265 °C, decrease between 370–500 °C, and then rise again at 625 °C. Induction periods for the reaction were observed at 370 and 500 °C. At 120 °C the reaction was found to follow the parabolic rate law, which indicates that the reaction was diffusion controlled. For reactions at 310 and 500 °C, the H/Ce vs, time curves were sigmoidal corresponding to four stages: induction, autoacceleration, linear and deceleration. Speculations are made as to the possible reaction mechanism.
