Abstract A study of the visible and infrared spectra and the magnetic moments of the addition compounds of mercury(II) oxide with some M II transition metal selenates has revealed that the metal ions in these compounds have nearly octahedral environment. M II ‐coordination to the selenate ion has only been found in compounds with a HgO content below that of the basic selenate HgSeO 4 · 2 HgO. Mercury oxide in its ligand field behaviour was found to resemble water closely.
