Dimethyl sulphoxide complexes of seven rare earth chlorides of the general formula MCl 3 · n DMSO where M La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, or Gd; n = 4 and M = Y; n = 3 have been isolated and characterized. The infrared studies reveal coordination through oxygen. The conductance data in acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide suggest a coordination number of 8 for lanthanons and 7 for yttrium. A bridge‐type structure involving chlorine is postulated.
