Abstract The preparation of some new hexachloroniobates(V), hexabromoniobates(V), oxopentachloro‐ and oxopentabromoniobates(V) from niobium(V) pentahalides and oniumhalides are reported. Detailed spectral data are presented for the above species in acetonitrile. The observed spectral transitions are due in all observed cases to π → t 2g transitions; minor details of intensity, contour shapes and small maximum shifts allow to distinguish individually between NbX 6 − , NbX 6 and NbOX 5 chromophores. The possible origin of the observed splitting of the π → t 2g bands are briefly discussed.
