Abstract Anhydrous hydrazine and phenylhydrazine react with tin(IV) bromide and iodide in dilute chloroform or benzene solutions to form products of empirical compositions Br 3 SnN 2 H 3 (I), SnBr 4 · 6 N 2 H 4 (II), Br 3 SnC 6 H 5 NHNH (III), SnBr 4 · 4 C 6 H 5 NHNH 2 (IV), SnI 4 · 8 N 2 H 4 (V) and SnI 4 · 8 C 6 H 5 NHNH 2 (VI). Of these I and III are pure compounds, the others II, IV to VI are mixture of (Hydrazino or phenylhydrazino) basic tin(IV) halides and base hydrohalide. I and III give with pyridine adducts, Br 3 SnN 2 H 3 · C 5 H 5 N (VII) and Br 3 SnC 6 H 5 NHNH · C 5 H 5 N (VIII). The thermal decomposition and infrared spectra of some of the reaction products have been studied.
