High‐temperature reactions (950–1000 °C) were carried out between pyrophyllite, (OH) 2 Al 2 Si 4 O 10 , and CuO as well as MgO. DTA of pyrophyllite gave the temperature 735–740 °C for dehydroxylation. By x‐ray diffraction method, it was possible to identify the resulting phases of these solid reactions. In case of the CuO reaction products, their light absorption was measured spectrophotometrically. In the case of heating pyrophyllite at ≥ 800 °C its structure was broken down. With CuO the formation of the copper spinel CuAl 2 O 4 together with other phases were observed. The results are compared with the results of previous authors.
