The preparation of elemental boron by reduction of boron halides with sodium in the vapour phase is described. The reduction was carried out in an apparatus with tantalum lining in vacuo at temperature of 440–460°C. The reaction yield amounted in average 85 per cent, with a total amount of about 5 g of finely divided amorphous boron.
