The mass spectra of silane and the four methylsilanes have been recorded at 70 eV energy and at stepwise lowered energy values. The study of the abundancy of the ions and examination of metastable ions is used to explain the ionization phenomena under electron impact. The dominating factors in the cleavage processes are the fact that the SiH bond is relatively weaker than the SiC bond and the possibility of elimination of stable molecules (C 2 H 4 ) with formation of rearrangement ions.
