The formation of iron(III)‐complexes with some phenolic acids viz. 1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoic acid, sulpho‐p‐cresotic acid and acetyl‐p‐cresotic acid has been investigated spectrophotometrically by J OB 's method of continuous variation. The composition of violet coloured complex in each system was found to be 1:1. From spectrophotometric data the values of the formation constant for the 1:1 complex ions viz. (Fe‐1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoate) + (Fe‐sulfo‐p‐cresotate) + and (Fe‐acetyl‐p‐cresotate) + have been calculated which work out to be 1.25 · 10 2 , 1.06 · 10 2 and 4.64 · 10 2 respectively.
