Colored complexes of iron (III) are formed in solution with salicylhydroxamic acid. Their compositions were studied by J OB's method of continued variation as well as the Slope‐ratio method introduced by H ARVEY and M ANNING . The violet‐colored complex contained iron and the reagent in the proportion of 1:1, while in the wine‐red compound, they are present in the ratio of 1:2.
