Conductivity and depression in freezing point of a series of solutions containing a fixed amount of boric acid and varying quantities of magnesium borate have been determined. The values obtained indicate the formation of ‐three possible compounds: MgO · 4 B 2 O 3 · 9 H 2 O, MgO · 3 B 2 O 3 · 6 H 2 O and 2 MgO · 3 B 2 O 3 · 3 H 2 O. The results have been confirmed by quantitative estimation of magnesium and B 2 O 3 in the precipitates obtained from solutions corresponding to the above mentioned complexes. It has also been observed that magnesium metaborate forms soluble complexes with a number of ammonium salts, the detailed results of which will be communicated later.
