Abstract The addition of acidified potassium periodate solution to red phosphorus leads to its gradual disappearance accompanied with the evolution of iodine. The rate of the above change was found to be measurably slow at ordinary temperatures. Hence, it was of some interest to study the kinetics of this oxidation process in some detail. The present paper deals with studies of the velocity coefficient of the above reaction at different temperatures and different concentrations. The temperature coefficient and energy of activation of the process have been evaluated. From the results the nature of the possible reactions involved and its mechanism has been discussed.
