To examine the author’s own organisation in some more detail, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is spread across four sites giving a total exhibition floor area approaching 100,000 m2. Storage and transportation areas are not included in this figure. With a total collection of four million objects there is ample opportunity for disastrous interaction of pollution with single objects in the collection. Like all heritage collections, there are unique objects in unique surroundings. One of the UK government’s (ANONYMOUS, 2001) objectives is to provide access to the public to these heritage collections.
