The continuous background appearing in PIXE spectra has been studied in detail and is understood to comprise three main components: secondary electron bremsstrahlung (SEB), atomic bremsstrahlung (AB) and nuclear bremsstrahlung (NB). Here, studies on continuous x‐rays in PIXE are reviewed and a new phenomenon is discussed, the screening effect of the projectile by target electrons in AB. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
