Abstract The x‐ray fluorescence radiation of carbon was studied in the presence of elements with high atomic numbers in the material irradiated. It was found that photo and Auger electrons of such elements originating from ionization of shells remote from nucleus (L‐, M‐ and N‐shells) effectively excite atoms of carbon. Hence, using a matrix with Z > 30, the influence of the electrons should be considered, and using a matrix with Z > 50 this influence becomes decisive. Calculations of carbon x‐ray fluorescence intensity were executed for different x‐ray tube anodes. Their correctness is confirmed by agreement with experimental results.
