We present a design and test results of a high‐temperature superconducting magnet, which is under development for use in a new cryogen‐free electron beam ion trap. The magnet is designed to provide a magnetic field as high as about 3 T with a combination of six double‐pancake coils. In order to achieve such a high field, the critical current is increased by cooling the magnet down to 20 K with a refrigerator. Before the full development, a single‐pancake coil has been produced and tested.
