During the assessment of the accuracy of a method for the XRF analysis of oxides, silicates and carbonates using synthetically prepared fused bead calibration samples, it was found that for iron there was a consistent bias when comparing the x‐ray results for 43 Reference Materials with the certified values. This paper offers an explanation for this bias, which was of the order of 1.5% relative over the concentration range 0–100% Fe 2 O 3 .
