A simple model is presented for calculating the spectral scatter efficiency of Barkla scatterers. It was found that they can be divided into three distinct groups according to their scattering behaviour. Results are presented graphically for a selection of scatters. The experimental comparison of the scatterers thus selected, viz. B 4 C, graphite and Al 2 O 3 , showed that Al 2 O 3 is suitable for the analysis of a wide range of elements. Further experimental conditions such as filtering and choice of the tube anode were investigated.
