The limit of detection of the external beam PIXE method was investigated in the proton energy range 1.7–5.6 MeV for elements with Z ≥ 26. The effect of matrix composition was studied by evaluating detection limits for typical thick organic, biomedical, bone and geological samples. Particular attention was paid to the optimization of measuring times.
