A theoretical evaluation of the efficiency of correction for the matrix absorption effect using Compton scattered x‐rays in EDXRF analysis has been carried out for thick samples and for monoenergetic primary radiation. The limitations of this correction method and the procedure for the selection of the optimum excitation energy are presented.
